AbstractI am very grateful for the invitation to comment on Gunther Rothenberg's well-balanced and highly informative reflections on the Habsburg army from 1649 to 1918. This is, however, no easy task. Given the desperate situation of Austrian military history—or rather, the persistent neglect of the unpleasantly martial side of Austrian history—the problem of the Habsburg monarchy's military performance raised by Charles Ingrao and developed by Rothenberg needs much more empirical research to be resolved. So instead of using this forum to indulge in my own speculations, I would like to examine why we know so little about the Habsburg army and how this situation could be changed in the near future. |
