Information for Contributors

General

1. Please submit manuscripts in triplicate in English or in French. They should be addressed to:

Herrick Chapman, Editor FPC&S
Institute of French Studies
New York University
15 Washington Mews
New York, NY 10003

Submissions should include the name, address, institutional affiliation, and telephone number (as well as fax number and e-mail address, if available) of the author. If you wish a copy of the manuscript returned to you, please enclose a large self-addressed stamped envelope.

2. Also submit a clearly labeled computer disk copy of the manuscript in PC or Mac format and in either Word or Word Perfect. Clearly label the disk with your name, article title, program and format used, and filenames.

3. Main articles are usually 20 to 30 double-spaced pages including notes (5000 to 7500 words), review articles 8 to 10 pages (2000 to 2500 words), and book reviews, 3 to 6 pages (750 to 1500 words). Articles written for the "Debates and Events" section of the journal may be 10 to 20 pages including notes (2500 to 5000 words). Book reviews should avoid notes if possible.

4. Double-space everything, including quotations and endnotes.

5. All notes should be endnotes (and not footnotes). We do not use the author-date system, whereby authors are cited in brackets in the text and references are listed at the end.

6. If possible, italicize words that will be italicized in the published text.

7. Authors must obtain and furnish written proof of permission to reproduce artwork.

8. Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with this style sheet and the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style.

9. If an article is accepted for publication the author should prepare a 100-word abstract and list of key words in English or in French. (This applies to research articles only, not to review articles, book reviews or articles published in the "Debates and Events" section of the journal).

Endnotes

We use the short-title system and follow the notation of the Chicago Manual of Style. The first reference to any work gives full bibliographic information, including the subtitle, if any, which should be separated from the title by a colon (for books published in English). For books, give the place of publication, publisher and year of publication.

In any case, please, follow the examples listed below:

Books

First reference: Kristin Gager, Blood Ties and Fictive Ties: Adoption and Family Life in Early Modern France (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1996), pp. 50-65.

Subsequent references: Gager, Blood Ties and Fictive Ties, p. 55.

Journal Articles

First reference: Patrice L.-R. Higonnet, "The Politics of Linguistic Terrorism," Social History 5, 1 (1980), p. 80.

Subsequent references: Higonnet, "The Politics of Linguistic Terrorism and Grammatical Hegemony during the French Revolution," p. 82.

If the article is quoted in its entirety, then use the colon to set off the page numbers.

E.g.: Patrice L.-R. Higonnet, "The Politics of Linguistic Terrorism and Grammatical Hegemony during the French Revolution," Social History 5, 1 (1980): 80-98.

pp. is used only for the number of pages the author is referring to (AND NOT for the total length of the article)

Book Essays

First reference: Dorothy Pickles, "The Politics of Linguistic Terrorism and Grammatical Hegemony during the French Revolution," in Conflict and Consensus in France, ed. Vincent Wright (London: Frank Cass, 1979), pp. 122-24.

Subsequent references: Pickles, "The Politics of Linguistic Terrorism," p. 160.

Use pp. if the whole article is quoted.

Newspaper Articles

Le Monde, 10 December 1992.

The same rules apply to books, articles, and journals in French.
