In this article I will discuss the ways in which Constantinople is presented in a series of English, French and German nineteenth-century guidebooks prior to the arrival of mass tourism, before the city itself underwent radical transformation under the influence of the major political and war developments in the early twentieth century and before the name Constantinople was replaced in the titles of guidebooks by Istanbul. |
