During the 1998 ICAES meeting at Williamsburg, Professor Aparna Rao suggested to me that I guest edit an issue of Nomadic Peoples on nomadism in Iran based on recent studies by anthropologists and other specialists of pastoral nomadic society. At that time it seemed to me to be too early. In winter 2001, when I met her in Cologne, I told her that I could edit a special issue in about a year. Amazingly enough I have been able to do so on time. I approached a number of scholars for this issue and fortunately, the majority accepted my proposal, and with the good and prompt translations of Mr Hamid Taqavipour, and the generous funding by the University of Cologne, I am very pleased to offer you the result of this project. There are definite shortcomings at all levels, but given our various limitations, it is a first step, however small.
